Here is a lovely Winter Solstice meditation idea for you!

Today we celebrate the shortest day and longest night of the year for the Southern Hemisphere.

For me this is the most special time of the wheel of the year. It is a time where the sacred idea of letting go and new beginnings coincide. It is a time to welcome the sunshine back into your heartspace as the days from here on start to get longer as we move toward the warmer months.

At home we mark this occasion with a special dinner, to me it feels like Christmas but better. It is a time of being together, reflection, feasting and contemplation.

We have a big pot of Wasail boiling away all day, the table is decorated, the fire is on, we eat foods that represent warmth, pumpkin, curry, orange and spice.

I feel that the earth feels different, there seems to be a twinkle in the eyes of passers by, an element of fun and energy in the air.

Here is a ritual that you might like to consider bringing into your day to mark this special time.

  • Find a quiet place to sit or do this with family, light a candle, and turn off the lights.
  • For a few moments, gently gaze at the flame. Looking at this one singular point can help quiet your mind so you can focus your attention inward. Deepen your breath as you watch the the flickering light.
  • Then, with your eyes still on the flame, bring to mind the past year . Play through the highs and lows your mind, without judging or assigning meaning to any of the memories that come up. Continue until you feel like you’ve run through enough of the year to move on.
  • Gently move your attention away from the flame andlook in the mirror. Consider the challenges of the year—your regrets, mistakes, and missed opportunities—and whisper, “I forgive the dark and move into the light” to yourself, you may like to say this several times. Look back at the candle as a symbol of the bright new hope and wonderful new beginnings that may come your way over the next 12 months. You might like to take time to write some of theses down in your journal.
  • You might like to conclude the ritual by making a commitment to wake with the sun tomorrow if you can, using the first few moments of the day to move your body, meditate, eat a nourishing breakfast, get outside, or do anything else that makes you feel happy and hopeful.
